Available Positions & Funding Opportunities

Graduate Student

Are you interested in developing optical instrumentation for biomedical and environmental applications? Currently seeking domestic MSc or PHD candidates with experience in NIR spectroscopy, time-resolved single photon counting for bioluminescence, flash photolysis, and miniaturized biosensor devices.

OPTICAL ANALYSIS OF ALGAL BLOOMS IN INDEIGENOUS TKARONTO & SIX NATIONS

MiBAR biophotonics research team at York University is seeking a Masters student to study the optical properties of algae in water bodies encompassed by Indigenous Tkaronto and Six Nations. The goal of the investigation is to use our novel technology to analyze and correlate the photonic properties of algae in the Tkaronto region water as a biomarker indicator of “health” and/or “stress” of water ecosystem.  The Masters student could begin as early as 2023, but more likely in 2024.  We seek a Masters student in the field of chemistry (physical or analytical instrumentation) or biophysics/engineering (biophotonics).   Preference may be given to candidates from the local region encompassing Tkaronto and Six Nations under study in this project.

Please contact principal investigator, Prof. Ozzy Mermut, with your CV and statement of interest. Co-Investigators:  Prof. Sylvie Morin (Dept Chemistry, York U); Prof. William Pietro (Dept Chemistry, York U); Prof. Christopher Barrett (Dept Physics and Astronomy, York U, and Dept Chemistry, McGill U)

MOLECULAR OPTICAL PHOTOSWITCH BIOSENSING

We are interested in synthetic chemists with background in DFT computation, as well as synthesis of photo-switch molecular biosensor platforms for detecting hallmark biomarkers of aging, cancer, and disease. We also seek candidates that are interested in design of miniaturized optical biosensor instrumentation based on enabling fiber optics and SiPM detectors.

NON-INVASIVE OPTICAL NEUROSTIMULATION EVALUATION

Do you have experience in developing integrated biophotonic near Infrared (NIR) optical systems for brain and vision research?  A conditional post-doctoral position up to 1 year is available in Dr. Ozzy Mermut Integrated Biophotonics Laboratory in collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Steeves in the Perceptual Neuroscience Laboratory doing interdisciplinary stimulation and sensor systems development for research in the Dept of Physics and Dept of Psychology, Faculty of Heath at York University in Toronto. The post-doctoral candidate shall have a background in NIR oximetry systems (hardware and analysis software) development experience, and the project will seek to design and integrating NIR cerebral oximetry sensing with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.  This position is conditional on a successful post-doctoral fellowship award from VISTA program, Vision: Science to Application at York University http://vista.info.yorku.ca/opportunities/training-scholarships/postdoctoral-awards/ or an equivalent fellowship.  Qualified and enthusiastic candidates, please contact Profs Jennifer Steeves ( steeves@yorku.ca) and/or Ozzy Mermut ( omermut@yorku.ca).
